Wood vs. Metal Snare Drums: What’s the Difference?

Wood and metal: not worlds apart but two different flavors

Unlike toms or bass drums – which are usually made from wood – snare drums often come in two distinct shell types. Apart from exotic materials like acrylic or carbon, the vast majority of snare drums are crafted from either wood or metal. Millenium’s snare lineup includes both. But what sets these materials apart?

Generally, metal snare drums deliver a livelier, more open, and overtone-rich sound, while wood snares tend to be more compact and focused. Metal snares are often described as “punchier” or “louder,” whereas wood models are praised for their “warmer” or “rounder” tones.

What metals are used in Millenium snares?

The most common materials for metal snares are steel and brass. Steel is harder than brass and produces the most present and cutting sound of all alloys. Millenium offers several steel snare options. The 14” x 6.5” Power Steel Snare, with its large shell volume, is a powerhouse – perfect for rock, metal, and pop. For a more versatile choice, the shallower 14” x 5.5” model offers slightly less volume but a more direct sound. Its center bead reinforces stability, further enhancing its punch.

For the sharpest, most explosive sound, check out the shallow Steel Piccolos and the 13” x 3.5” Black Beast Piccolo. Both are ideal for high-pitched tones, whether as a side snare or for funk, hip-hop, and electronic music.

Wood snare drums: warm, versatile, and full-bodied

Millenium also offers wood snares, like the 13” x 7” Mahogany Snare Drum. Though an inch smaller in diameter, it packs a punch with its deep shell. The drum features a blend of three woods – mahogany, poplar, and maple – creating a full, warm, yet sensitive sound suitable for almost any genre. The soft shell construction effectively tames unwanted overtones.

Small metal effect snares: secret weapons!

With their compact diameter, the 10” x 5.5” Millenium Side Snares can be tuned higher than any other drum in the range. An integrated mount lets you position them almost anywhere on your kit. Choose from steel, copper, or brass: steel offers the brightest sound, copper the darkest, and brass falls somewhere in between. Don’t overthink your choice – each brings unique character and handling to your setup.
