Unlike toms or bass drums – which are usually made from wood – snare drums often come in two distinct shell types. Apart from exotic materials like acrylic or carbon, the vast majority of snare drums are crafted from either wood or metal. Millenium’s snare lineup includes both. Generally, metal snare drums deliver a livelier, more open, and overtone-rich sound, while wood snares tend to be more compact and focused. Metal snares are often described as “punchier” or “louder,” whereas wood models are praised for their “warmer” or “rounder” tones.

What metals are used in Millenium snares?

The most common materials for metal snares are steel and brass. Steel is harder than brass and produces the most present and cutting sound of all alloys. Millenium offers several steel snare options. The 14” x 6.5” Power Steel Snare, with its large shell volume, is a powerhouse – perfect for rock, metal, and pop. For a more versatile choice, the shallower 14” x 5.5” model offers slightly less volume but a more direct sound. Its center bead reinforces stability, further enhancing its punch.
